Saunders Family of Bray and Cookham, Maidenhead

Does anyone living in Bray or Cookham know of any ancestors called Edwin and Harriet Saunders (nee Cartland)? They had children called: Arthur, George, William, Walter, Susan and Alice. They lived at Portland Place, West Street in Cookham. Also Moffat Street in Bray. James, Edwin's brother was the Chief Superintendent of Special Police of the Great Western Railway.

Edwin's son William ran an iron foundry in Bray/Cookham, and his brothers were Gothic iron workers. William Saunder's son moved this foundry down to Black Rock in Brighton , where they made gates for the Library, Roedean, The Royal Pavilion, and some very large houses in the area.

If anyone can give me any information on these 'past' ancestors of Bray and Cookham in Maidenhead, I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks

Information Wanted

My husband's grandfather was living at The Lodge, Down Place at the time of his death in 1935. He was a groom. Could anyone tell me if this means he would have been employed at Down Place .

I also have Tithe Barn Cottages and Arkley Bungalow, Holyport Road as addresses where his widow subsequently lived. If anyone could give me any information on any of these addresses I would be most grateful.

Thank you in anticipation - Rose Ridgewell (roseridgewell@gmail.com)

Girl Guides

Do you remember your days as a Guide, Brownie or Rainbow with fondness? Can you now give back to the community and allow the young women and girls of today a chance to be part of the guiding movment? Bray and Holyport urgently need new blood. We need adults to work alongside experienced guiders and make it possible for our Guides, Brownies and particularly our Rainbow units to continue.

Rainbows are the youngest section of Girlguides UK. They are aged 5-7yrs and have lots of fun playing games and learning how to be good citizens. We teach them the value of friendship, being helpful to others and caring
for animals and the enviroment.

Guiding has changed over the years and the girls are taught lifeskills for the modern world, while having lots of fun and making new friends. Come along and see us in action or, if you want to know more, contact me.
You will "SURPRISE YOURSELF" I promise!

Seeking anyone who may have been living in the village in the 1950s

Seeking anyone who may have been living in the village in the 1950s or earlier and who may have known my great-great-aunt Ida Dorothea Bennett. She lived at 4 Bettoney Vere from the mid-1930s until her death in 1960. Prior to her move to Bettoney Vere she owned a house then called Heritage in what is now Old Mill Lane but was then Monkey Island Lane. I believe the house is now known as Millwrights. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail or by telephone on 024 7652 3110.

I am looking for any info regarding a Mr James Salmond from Bray who went to America about 1920s and returned home to Bray in 1928. He served in either The Royal Irish Rifles or the dubs, and fought at Paschendale. He had two sons, one died aged 18 and the other, called Edward, still survives and lives here in Irvine. He would dearly like to find out about his parents so if anyone can help we will be very happy.

Thanking you in anticipation.
